"UNLIKELY PILGRIMS" TO PREMIERE AT THE FEMALE EYE FILM FESTIVAL>>>
“Unlikely Pilgrims is charged with compelling testimony about what makes Catholic youth tick. The candidness of the pilgrims’ responses is refreshing but not always comforting.” -Catholic Times Montreal
UNLIKELY PILGRIMS, a 42-minute documentary about young Canadians and faith, will make its national premiere at the Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 3:30 p.m. at the Townhall Theatre (2 Sussex Ave.).
Written, directed and produced by Agata De Santis and Laura Ieraci, UNLIKELY PILGRIMS is an honest and unique look at young Canadians and faith. This touching documentary follows four friends on a seven-day pilgrimage to World Youth Day as they share the challenges and joys they experience being religious in today’s secular world.
Gyslain and Richard are old high school buddies who unexpectedly meet up at World Youth Day. Both credit their faith for leading them out of years of drug and alcohol addiction, jail time and prostitution.
Monica is not your average teenager. Unlike many 17-year-olds, she is actively religious and not afraid to show it. Despite her convictions, Monica admits she still wrestles with some of the Church’s teachings.
Joey is convinced he was brainwashed by his family into following Catholicism as a child. Now in university, Joey is making up his own mind. He doesn’t have all the answers yet, but he’s confident that he can reconcile his liberal views with the teachings of the Church.
Their testimonials, at times funny and heart-warming and at other times terrifying and honest, offer a glimpse into the phenomenon of young people and faith
The documentary idea was conceived by Ieraci, a two-time World Youth Day pilgrim. With a small private donation that barely covered travel expenses and a lot of determination, De Santis and Ieraci set off to Toronto to do the unthinkable – make a documentary with no funding. Unlikely Pilgrims is their first documentary.
